Biological type: Perennial with rhizomes
- Plant propagates mostly vegetatively (rhizomes...); establishment from seedling is rare.
- Height: 20-120 cm, according to the nature of stems (sterile or fertile). Underground stem stout and extensive (rhizome ) without cavity persisting during the summer.
- Stems sterile (up to 120 cm; 12 mm in diameter), ivory-white, finely striated, smooth, with a large central cavity; short sheaths ; numerous whorls of green branches, simple, long 8-angled.
- Stem fertile (up to 40 cm, 15 mm in diameter), light-yellow or brown, simple, smooth; brown campanulate sheaths, with 20-30 linear teeth.
- Fruiting: big spike (4-8 cm x 1-2 cm), oblong, with the sporangia.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with Equisetum arvense L.
- Biological type: Perennial with rhizomes.
