- Plant mostly propagates vegetatively (rhizomes...); establishment from seedling is rare.
- Height: 50-130 cm. Plant stiffly hairy.
- Stem erect, stiff, mostly branched, slightly angular at the base, terete above with spreading hairs. Rhizome more or less superficial.
- Leaves opposite in the lower part, with simple and glandular hairs or nearly glabrous, sessile. Leaves oblong lanceolate, toothed, semi-amplexicaule.
- Flowers pink-crimson, large (2 cm), with a long inferior ovary, stigma with 4-crossed lobes.
- Fruit : capsule pubescent. Seeds long-haired.
- Plant very noxious because its abundence in canals, drainage channels and water ditches. Plant melliferous. Plant used as a substitute of cotton for the long hairs of the pappus but unsuccessfully. Rare in crops.
