- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, lanceolate, more or less toothed.
- Height: 5-20 cm. Small plant with a slender root.
- Stem ascending, yellowish-green, often red-tinged, branched near the base.
- Leaves lower opposite, later alternate. Lower leaves closed, small, sessile. Later leaves linear, entire-margined, and spiny or truncate apex. Whitish latex.
- Flowers yellow-green very small in umbels. Bracts linear, broad or lanceolate, grass-green, very distant. 3-rayed cymes terminal on the stem or on branches with several axillary branches.
- Fruit : capsule glabrous with narrow furrows slightly opened (2 mm). Seed 4-angled, furrowed-embossed, yellowish to black-brown.
- Plant toxic, vermifuge; the root is purgative.
