- Leaves : greenish, carinate, with marked central vein, edge scabrous.
- Height : 50-150 cm.
- Leaves : often reddened, without ligule and auricles, sheath carinate; blade 10-30x0.5-1.2 cm, scabrous at the edge; edge with characteristic elongate patent hairs between the blade and the sheath.
- Inflorescence : greenish, abundant, contracted, formed by many racemes alternately arranged along a slightly curved or erect axis; sometimes with tuft of hairs at the nodes ; spikelets 2-flowered, the lower sterile or male, the upper hermaphrodite ; lower glume 1/3 as long as the sterile lemma, ciliate along the veins ; lemma 4 mm, sterile, with 2 rows of cilia along each side, glabrous at the central part, awn 5 up to 10 mm.
