- Leaves : usually pubescent ; margin scabrous ; marked central vein, sheath carinate.
- Height : 80-150 cm.
- Culm: erect, compressed, geniculate at base, glabrous ; lower nodes pubescent for a crown of dense, short and reddened hairs.
- Leaves : without ligule and auricles ; blade 10-40x1-2 cm, linear ; sheath and blade glabrous or slighty pubescent (mainly at the base).
- Inflorescence : many racemes arranged along an erect or scarcely curved axis reddish at maturation; spikelets 3.8-6.5 mm arranged in 2 unilateral rows, 2-flowered, the lower sterile or male, the upper hermaphrodite ; lower glume 3.5 mm, about 1/2 as long as the sterile lemma which is awned (awn 4-5 mm) or mucronate.
- Fruit : big, elliptic caryopsis, bigger than other Echinochloa species.
