- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, with a rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, deeply dentate.
- Height: 10-60 cm. Pubescent plant.
- Stem covered with woolly hairs.
- Leaves with the veins white and prominent on the underside, oblong, pinnatifid, pale green, the margins with little spiny teeth. Stem leaves sessile.
- Flowers yellow. Involucre large, ovoid, equalled or exceeded by outer bracts, dentate, spiny, inner bracts lanceolate, ended by a long point with yellowish spreading lateral spines on each side.
- Fruits : achenes brown; shiny, shorter than the pappus, covered with long hairs (6-8, 2-2.5 mm long).
- Valued plant in herbal medicine: bitter, an aid to digestion and for disorders of stomach, catarrh and hysteria. The fruits are used against pleurisy. Root sudorific and used against fever.
