- Cotyledons: round-oval, narrowed into stalk.
- Leaves: entire, with spiny prickles.
- Height 20 to 60 cm, Plant pubescent.
- Stem little branched, spreading branches short.
- Leaves: (tenacious), pubescent, sessile or clasping stem, pinnatifid with lanceolate, prickly serrate tips. Upper leaves clasping stem.
- Flowers: yellow with red veins, flowers heads single at tip of branches. Big involucre, surrounded by pinnatifid and very prickly leaves.
- Fruits: achenes greyish, smooth. The longest pappus hairs are as long as the fruits, medical, antiseptic.
