- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath.
- Lamina 20-50 times longer than large, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.
- Height: 50-90 cm. Cespitose.
- Stem erect, smooth.
- Leaf with irregular hairs on border and upper face of lamina weakly striated, rolled in spiral, with terminal point in hood. Leaf sheath glabrous, fused upto 2/3 of it's length.
- Inflorescence : slack erect panicles. Numerous spikelets and multiflorous. Seeds are rolled in small rod in rough and membranous margin of glume. Inclined spikelets. Convex on back of caryopsis and deeply caniculate on bottom. Awn remains straight at maturity.
- Species rare in crops. But has been a serious weed in earlier times. Occasionally a problem in U.K.
