- Rolled shoot, cylindrical leaf sheath.
- Lamina 20-50 times longer than large, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.
- Height: 10-50 cm. Cespitose.
- Stem slender.
- Leaves flat, more or less hairy on both faces and on leaf sheath, elongated, pointed. Leaf sheath fused to 2/3 of it's length.
- Inflorescence slightly slack and erect, slightly inclined at the end, ramose, erect or flat, 2-5, generally short and unequal, 2-3 spikelets. Spikelets 3-5 cm long, fan shaped with red-purplish awns, slender 7-12 florets with unequal glumes (right awn equal size to glume).
- Risk of confusion at seedling stage with all other species of Bromus genus.
