- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath.
- Lamina 20-50 times longer than large, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.
- Height: 20-80 cm. Cespitose.
- Stem straight, glabrous.
- Leaf and leaf sheath hairy. Basal leaf sheath with maroon stripes. Leaf sheath fused for 2/3 of it's length.
- Inflorescence: green or purplish panicle, oblong, erect, always contracted, with short clustered branches, united. Spikelets glabrous or hairy, 25-45 mm tall, lanceolate, erect, 9-17 imbricated flowers, awns bending at maturity.
Species rare in crops.
