- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath.
- Lamina 20-50 times longer than large, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.
Plant
- Height: 35-90 cm. Cespitose.
- Stem ascending-geniculate. Glabrous node.
- Leaves hairy. Leaf sheath hairy, fused upto 2/3 of it's length.
- Inflorescence: panicle 15-25 cm, pale-green, becoming purple-red, rough, erect, slightly dense. Spikelets 3-5 cm Stretched above, 6-11 flowers. Unequal glumes, the lower with equal sized awn.
- Fruits: caryopsis with pointed keel and very long scabrous awns.
- Risk of confusion at stage of seedling with other species of Bromus genus.
