- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath tubular and hairy to downy, leaf flat, leaf blade moderately hairy.
- Ligule 1 to 4 mm long, white, at first with entire margin, blunt, later becoming torn. Auricles absent.
- Height: 40 to 120 cm.
- Shoot erect or geniculate and ascending, usually rather short, nodes pubescent.
- Leaves flat and soft.
- Inflorescence: Panicle more or less erect or slightly nodding; looser and longer than B. mollis. Spikelets 18 to 28 mm long, of 5 to 8 florets, hairless, ovate lanceolate. Lemmas with membranous margins and fine straight awn from just below the tip.
