- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath.
- Lamina 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.
-Height: 50-80 cm. Cespitose.
- Stem erect.
- Leaves green slightly yellow, flat, 6-12 mm large, without hair, elongated. adult plant hairy although attenuated and almost shiny underneath, fused leaf sheath; with anthocyan. Leaf sheath fused on 2/3 of it's length.
- Inflorescence: panicle, clustered branches more or less numerous but very elongated, 1 or 2 at each node, each can bear ten spikelets. Spikelets of 3 cm, very flattened, highly carinate underneath and terminated by shorter awn often reduced or mucronate.
- Fruits dehiscent releases seed about 9 mm; caryopsis hairy on top. Glume with highly ciliate raceme, slightly extending over half the lemma.
- Fodder plant very productive, consumed by animals when green because the hay is hard and of bad quality. Introduced as a cover plant.
