- Plant propagates generally vegetatively (rhizomes ). Establishment from seedling is rare. Shoots with opposite leaves.
- Height: 50-80 cm.
- Stem erect.
- Leaves glabrous, linear, lanceolate or deeply divided in linear lobes, roughly and irregularly dentate.
- Flowers ligulate, yellow (5-6) purple striated, 10-30 cm long, gathered in heads. Involucral bracts of the same length. The external non foliaceous. Calyx scales as long as achenes.
- Fruits : achenes 4-7 mm long, finely tuberculate with 2 (scarcely 3 or 4 ) awns 1.5 to 2.7 mm long.
- Plant native to Central America, introduced in France in South West and Var. Ornamental plant, with decorative flowers. Rare in crops.
