- Cotyledons round to oval, almost sessile.
- Foliage leaves obovate, entire to lightly dentate, margin ciliated, under surface hairy, arranged in rosettes.
- Height: 10-30 cm.
- Stem leafless, slightly branched, hollow and widening out under the flower heads. There may be several stems coming out of one rosette.
- Foliage leaves oblong ovate, slightly dentate, margin ciliated, undersurface hairy, arranged in rosettes.
- Flower: Heads with yellow rayflowers and green sepals, about 10 cm diameter.
- Fruit : wedge-shaped, ribbed lengthwise, mostly square-headed in cross-section, greenish-yellow to shining-brown, about 1.5 mm long, without pappus.
- Acidophil and Indicator for low nutrient soils, stated as endangered in the "Red Data Book". Biological type: annual.
Spread: decreasing in cultivated areas in Great-Britain.
