- Rolled shoot leaf sheath cylindrical.

- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.

- Ligule membranous truncated, dentate membranous, auricles absent.

- Height: 60-140 cm.

- Stem glabrous, numerous, and slightly shiny. Rhizomes whitish prostrate on the ground surface. The bulbous form is characterised by the swollen stem bases which may form dense clumps of 'bulbs' or 'onions'

- Leaves flat, with slightly marked venation distinctly streamlined at base of leaf underside. Leaf sheath rapidly opened, ciliate with long white hair.

- Inflorescence: slack panicle elongated (10-30 cm), whitish or purplish, contracted before and after flowering.

- Fruits: Caryopsis The non-bulbous form is common in field margins and rough grass; the bulbous form is an arable weed.

- Biological type: perennial with tuber.
