- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, ciliate, auricles absent.
- Height: 60-130cm. Plant tufted.
- Stem erect, often branched.
- Leaves linear (30-60 x 3-6 cm), hairy at the base.
- Inflorescence : digitate spikes of 7-15 cm long. spikelets long-haired, one hermaphrodite sessile, the other one stalked. Lemma with a long geniculate awn (10-15 mm).
- Rare in crops, but frequency increasing.
- Risk of confusion with Dichanthium ischaemum (L.) Roberty.
