- Plant propagates vegetatively by bulb; establishment of seedling is rare.

- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath.

- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, glabrous.

- Ligule membranous pointed, auricles absent

Height: 20-150 cm.

- Leaves green, branches clustered on panicles effuse and spreading.

- Inflorescence: Panicle can reach 25 cm. Stem smooth not prostrate. Spikelet of 2 mm disposed in one oblong inflorescence, the clustered branches of which are unequal. Unequal glumes, upper twice the size of lower. Glume remains on the stem after shedding.

- Fruit: Caryopsis.

- Fodder plant of moderate value, but a serious weed of arable crops.

- Biological type: perennial with rhizomes
