- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath, fused and pubescent.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf more or less
hairy.
- Membranous and very short ligule, auricle elongated.
- Height: 30-120 cm.
- Leaves longer than 30 cm, upper face hairy and lower glabrous. Base of leaf sheath often reddish. Coleoptile with two visible leaf sheaths. Diameter of rhizomes 2-3 mm, circular in cross section, sometimes angular.

- Plant very competitive. The rhizomes used as infusion are counter-irritant, refreshing and diuretic.
