- Cotyledons elliptical to ovate, with rounded tip, more or less
petiolate.
- Entire leaves, lanceolate, more or less dentate.
- Height: 30-100 cm.
- Stem erect, branched on top. Greenish axis without hair.
- Lower leaves disposed in rosette. Sessile leaves, narrowly lanceolate to linear. Grey hair appressed, thick and silky.
- Flowers red-purple rarely white of about 30 cm. Petals shorter than sepals, and very short or slightly notched. Calyx 3-7 cm with ovoid oblong tube and linear pointed teeth.
- Fruits: capsules with 5 teeth, without carpophore, nor partition. Teeth long, up to 1/7 of capsule.
- Plant which was feared in cereals, its toxic seeds making flour unfit for consumption. Species decreasing in crops.
