Plant:
- Height 20-40 cm.
- Stem glabrous, hollowed, fluted or branched.
- Basal leaves in slight rosette, alternate, divided in rather short linear segments and often terminated by sharp point or mucro. The leaves divided, the lower ones petiolate, higher ones are sessile, multifid.
- Flowers are vivid red (rarely yellow) single and terminal with dark violet stamens.
- Fruit achene, wrinkled, tough, 5 mm long with vertical beak endowed with a small bump distal from the nib.
- Species decreasing in crops. Toxic plant. Pharmacological property (powerful heart tonic and diuretic).
