- Cotyledons : shortly petiolate, entire, oblong -rounded, glabrous with 3-5 conspicuous veins ; blade pale green on top and more whitish underneath with reddish colouration at base. Hypocotyl reddish with reflexed white hairs.
- Leaves : opposite, shortly petiolate, ovate, glabrous, pinnately veined, crenate ; blade pale green above with a reddish area at the basal part around the petiole.
- Height : 10-120 cm.
- Stem : erect, branched at base, reddened and finely pubescent.
- Leaves : lanceolate 17-30x9-14 mm, on arched petioles up to 1 cm, always more or less erect, denticulate; the basal opposite, the other alternate.
- Flowers : tetramerous in small axillary spikes ; the male above with 8-16 stamens, the female basal at the axil of a fan-like bract divided into 5-9 digitate lobes.
- Fruit : seed ellipsoid, smooth; caruncle small.
- Biological type : annual.
